Hey All,
I've cooked many things in the thermowell- stews, chili, pot roast, spaghetti sauce but never a whole chicken or a chicken cut up. I'm going to try my own recipe today. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
If anyone has tried chicken in the thermowell, let me know.
Thanks,
Virginia

The Idle Hour Cookbook, Second Edition, has a recipe for Smothered Chicken.
It also shows that chicken can be cooked in a Thermowell Kettle.
Here's the recipe for Smothered Chicken:
1 Baking chicken cut in pieces
Salt & pepper
Flour
1/3 cup fat or oil
1 T. minced onion
2 T. minced celery
1 cup water
Wash, cut up, and rinse your chicken. Dry with paper towels. Dredge chicken in seasoned flour (we like to use Tony Cachere's Cajun Seasoning instead of straight salt & pepper - TWW), and brown in large Thermowell kettle in hot fat on top burner. Add onion, celery, and water. Cook in Thermowell (no preheating) with 15 to 25 minutes of gas, depending upon the age of the chicken (food must come to a brisk boil without boiling over - TWW), and 1 1/2 to 3 hours (or all day) with the gas turned off completely. Just before serving, thicken liquid for delicious gravy.
Happy cooking with the gas turned OFF!

Todd,
Thanks, I did see that recipe. I'm going to try something a little different. I going to go French tonight and cook the chicken with wine, mushrooms, shallots. I usually cook without measuring things, but I'll write everything down and if it turns out great I'll post the recipe.
